Our Interlibrary Loan service (ILL) provides access to materials that are not held at or part of the Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin collections.

How To Start Using Colby’s Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL)

Before you can start using Colby’s ILL service, you need to create your ILLiad (ILL) account.

  • To do this on the Colby library web page, go to ‘My Accounts‘  in the menu bar, and select “My ILLiad Account” from the menu.

  • Fill out all the fields and submit! Contact the Interlibrary Loan staff if you need help.

Getting Full Text

  • When searching Colby’s library website and databases, you may find a bibliographic record for resources like books or articles that we don’t have in our physical collection or direct access to the full text of the article. 

  • When you come across an article that we don’t have full text to, you’ll get a message that looks like the one below

  • When you click the hyperlink REQUEST FROM ANOTHER LIBRARY a new browser window will open that takes you to our interlibrary loan service, if you’ve signed up for ILL some information is automatically pulled in from the citation you found. Fill in the date you need it by and SUBMIT!
  • Submit your request, and our Colby library staff will attempt to locate this article for you. For most articles, you can expect to receive an email notification that your article has arrived within about 2 business days! The article (PDF) can be downloaded from your ILL account.


ILL a Book or Physical Object

  • When you find a record (title, author etc.) for a book or other physical object that another library has and you want to borrow simply log into your ILL account and click on the BOOK link, fill out the required fields and submit.

  • NOTE: When you ILL a book or other objects not at Colby, getting the book or object here often takes over a week or more. If you have questions on getting the item please email us at AskUs!
    • Renewing an ILL book or or other physical object.

    • NOTE The “Renew Request” option will not be available if it is too soon to renew the item, or the due date has expired, or if no renewals are allowed on the item. Renewals are also always at the discretion of the lending library. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions about a specific title.
    • To renew an ILL physical item (book, etc.), log into your account and click on “Checked Out / Renew Items”. From there, to renew an item, please click on its Transaction Number. Then, click on “Renew Request”. Your renewal request will then be processed by our Interlibrary Loan staff.
