Colby faculty, students, and staff now have access to the New York Times Digital Edition through an Academic Site License provided by the Library. *
* Note: If you already have a paid or free personal nytimes.com account, please see those options under the appropriate tab below.
How do I register for an Academic Pass?
If you have any problems registering, please contact NYTimes help at [email protected] or 1-800-698-4637. Please state that you are registering for a Colby Academic Pass.
Register at New York Times Academic Pass.
- Use the search box to find “Colby College,” and click on the link.
- On the next page, choose “Create Account.”
- When you fill out the next form, be sure to use a Colby email address to set up your account.
- After you click the “Create Account” button, you will receive an email from the New York Times to validate your account. Follow the steps in the email, and your account is set up!
You will be informed if you already have a nytimes.com account associated with that email address. If so, please follow the instructions under the “I have a paid subscription” or “I have a free subscription” tabs below.
Faculty/staff access is valid for 364 days from the date you activate it; after it expires you can register as above for a new pass for 364 days. Student passes are valid until you graduate.
I am a returning Academic Pass user, how do I log in?
Once you have registered using the steps above, go to the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com from any device and location. In the upper right corner of the home page, click “Log In.”
I already have a paid personal nytimes.com or home delivery subscription and want to switch to the Academic Pass version. What do I do?
If you currently have a paid nytimes.com digital or print subscription of your own and you plan to use the same email address with the Academic Pass, you must first cancel your personal subscription. That will “free up” the username/email address so that it can be associated with the Academic Pass.
To cancel your personal subscription, contact NYTimes Customer Care and tell them to cancel your personal subscription. Wait a few days, and return to this page and follow the How do I register for an Academic Pass? steps above.
PLEASE NOTE: The Academic Pass has some restrictions that your personal subscription may not have – see the “What features doesn’t the Academic Pass include?” tab below. Consider the options carefully before deciding to cancel your own subscription. If you registered for your paid subscription under another email address, you can register for an Academic Pass and still keep your personal subscription.
I already have a free nytimes.com account (has limits on the number articles I can read), how do I sign up for the Academic Pass?
If you previously registered (not a paid subscription) with nytimes.com and want to take advantage of the Academic Pass, go to the Academic Pass page, click on “Already have an account? Login here »” and log in with your NYTimes email and password.
This will switch your free, limited access to the Academic Pass access.
Will I have access to cooking content through the Academic Pass?
The Academic Pass includes full access to cooking.nytimes.com and the cooking app.
Recipes saved under a personal subscription should be available to you under the Academic Pass, provided you use the same username (email address).
Are bonus subscriptions available for family members under the Academic Pass program?
Bonus subscriptions are not available under the Academic Pass. They are included only with paid personal subscriptions.
The Academic Pass does NOT include Premium Crosswords, the New York Times Crosswords apps, e-reader editions, bonus subscriptions or Times Premier content. Within the date range 1923-1980, PDFs are limited. For full access to the New York Times from 1923-1980, please use ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The New York Times.
What about mobile and tablet apps?
Your Academic Pass includes access to smartphone and tablet apps for both iOS and Android. Search for “New York Times” in your app store.
