February 10-14, 2025 marks Love Data Week, an international celebration of data held each year during the week of Valentine’s Day. Universities, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and individuals are encouraged to participate. The 2025 theme is Whose Data Is It, Anyway?
In celebration of Transgender Awareness Week, we’d like to feature the book, Trans and Gender Diverse Library Workers — a book entirely written and edited by trans and gender diverse people involved in the field.
Elm City Small Press Fest is an all-day celebration of contemporary printed material from local and national artists, zine-makers, independent publishers, and community collectives. Established in 2021, the fourth annual Fest is organized and hosted by Colby Libraries and Colby Arts Office.

Colby Libraries’ Digital Initiatives department collaborated with the Lights Out Gallery to archive 84 video interviews with Maine artists, offering insights into their creative processes and cultural significance. Through platforms like JSTOR, these interviews provide valuable resources for research, teaching, and appreciation of Maine’s artistic heritage, reflecting a broader commitment to digitizing and sharing the region’s cultural wealth. The Colby News interviewed Matt LeVan, Colby’s digital archives librarian for more details which can be found on ColbyNews and the Lights-Out Gallery interviews can be found on JSTOR.

The event will be held at Miller Library in the Robinson room on March 8th from 4:30 PM- 6:00 PM.
You might notice something missing from Roberts parking lot. During the recent storm, the pine tree at the Roberts entrance of Bixler came down on top of Big Blue – Colby Library’s outdoor book drop. While we work to replace it, please use it in the Bixler Library, Miller Library foyer, Diamond Building second floor, and Pulver Pavilion.

October 23rd -29th is International Open Access Week (OA Week)! OA Week is an annual awareness-raising campaign for individuals and organizations across the globe to encourage and reflect upon efforts to increase open access to information – free, immediate, online access to research and the right to use information as needed. This year’s theme of Community over Commercialization “encourages a candid conversation about which approaches to open scholarship prioritize the best interests of the public and the academic community – and which do not.” You can use the official social media hashtag #OAweek to keep up with news and share your own.
International Pronouns Day is celebrated on the third Wednesday of October each year. Join us for button-making in the Libraries on Wednesday, October 18th!
Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For more than 40 years, the annual event has brought together the entire book community — librarians, teachers, booksellers, publishers, writers, journalists, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools.
Join the Libraries on Thursday, October 12th, from noon to 1 p.m. for the final lecture in our series celebrating Hispanic/Latine/Latinx Heritage Month that explores the diverse cultures, lives, and languages of Hispanic/Latine/Latinx people.
